Digital Painting Light Studies

Adam chilling in bed with a knife, as one does.

So I haven’t used a pose reference for this pic (YET) but so far I really like how it’s turning out. Of course I got his skin tone all wrong (again) but I got really excited about the light and accuracy took a back seat.

For the lighting I googled “sunlit rooms” and “sunny rooms” and got this picture, which I used as reference, other than that I just made stuff up.:

I did a second picture with Leeman… a much simpler one but also a light study I like, however the anatomy so far is atrocious so I’ll have to post it later.

Below is the last speed paint of the night, depicting a scene that happens after Adam and Leeman are living together and getting along again. Adam has a collection of photographs that he has organized on a wall. When Leeman tells him a lot of the things in the pictures have been long destroyed in WWIII (such as the eiffel tower, the statue of liberty, cellphones), Adam takes those pictures off the wall and burns them. He takes the remainder and sets them on the floor to re-organize them before installing them on the wall again.

No reference used for this one… I was having fun with the contrast and shapes of the shadows here.

The un-fiddled-with version of the above pic.

I’ve realized more and more that my photography work has been affecting my approach to drawing, but I think with these pictures it’s become most apparent– especially in the first picture.

My favorite photography is macro, and I’ve had the pleasure of doing a lot of that this year. I love playing around with the depth of field, with soft bokeh and fuzzy backgrounds with sharp focus in between. Some day I’ll get my hands on a lens baby or a fancy tilt shift lens to experiment with… till then I guess I can just draw.
